Peter Pelland
Founder
Pelland Advertising

I was born and brought up in a small business environment, and the needs and interests of small businesses have been in my blood for a lifetime. My first entrepreneurial ventures developed while still in grade school and expanded into profitable freelance ventures in high school and college. After stints working in various advertising and marketing capacities (including newspapers, a city magazine, radio, and a year as a corporate marketing director), I founded my current company in 1980.

Until the mid-1990’s, Pelland Advertising’s primary concentration was the production and printing of four-color process collateral advertising. Our first clients were small to medium-sized ski areas from throughout the Northeastern United States. Due to the seasonal nature of that industry (and its year-to-year survival based upon the weather), I built complementary markets within the amusement park and family camping industries (the latter of which has proven itself to be much larger and more stable). Family campgrounds now constitute a major share of our overall client base. Since some point in 1997, my company (which had already gone all digital in its print advertising production) expanded into a second major area of concentration: Website development and hosting services.

From Day 1, Pelland Advertising has been committed to serving the needs of small businesses of all types, a determination which has grown all the more essential in this age of increasing threats to the health and survival of small firms in the shadow of Wal-Mart. If you are determined to see your business succeed in today’s competitive environment, I am determined to be an essential ingredient that will help to insure that success.

Like my father, I was brought up in a small home-based business environment. There could have been no better training for my position than my constant exposure as a child growing up around printing presses and light tables. I developed a strong sense of design and quality at a young age - this being the age of manual typesetting, hot glue, and X-Acto knives.

I was fortunate enough to have access to my father’s equipment, allowing me to experiment and develop the skills that I would put to use in creating my elementary school newspaper. My father took me on many weekend vacations to various photo shoot locations where I would learn the fundamentals of manual photography and black-and-white print development in our basement dark room. I put my early web site development skills to use in creating a video game website that attracted over a million visitors.

In my college years I became more involved in fixing computers in a help desk position, but I was also involved in a number of smaller design projects for Pelland Advertising on the side. After school I found a job in the hardware side of the industry as a technician - however, I soon found fixing computer peripherals to be lacking in its creative discretion. The time was right to join Pelland Advertising full-time.

Today, I find myself blessed with a dream job, working on interesting and diverse projects ranging from catalog design to flash animations to small advertisements to the re-creation of this very web site. I am proud to be part of a business whose customers actually benefit so greatly from its services and very fortunate to have a career where creative expression and quality workmanship are not only encouraged, but are prerequisite in all that we do.

My father was always the “computer guy,” and despite my best efforts (..or perhaps against his stern warnings), I’ve followed diligently in his digital footsteps. It is little wonder though, having spent my younger years playing with “the computer,” as well as downloading as far as my mouse could reach...

Today, I am a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I am studying in the field of Information Technology, with concentrations in Web Site Development and Interactive Multimedia Development. I have had the great fortune of an opportunity to work with Mr. Pelland, as well as his clients, over the course of two internships. I am pleased to continue that relationship on a part-time basis while I finish my studies.

Working with Pelland Advertising has been a rewarding as well as a learning experience. Our focus on the interests of small business sets the company apart, and sets a standard by which I hope to abide with my own startup – hopefully just a little ways down the road. While seeing the end result of many hours of coding (blood, sweat, and tears) can be quite gratifying, it is nothing compared to seeing how our efforts help to grow and flourish small businesses, in true partnership with the great people behind them.
